This Privacy Policy applies to the Media Notch mobile application (“Media Notch,” “Notch,” “Application,” “we,” “our,” or “us”), operated by Rover 5. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you use the Application.

By downloading, accessing, or using the Application, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Information We Collect

We may collect information that you provide directly to us, as well as certain information that is collected automatically when you use the Application.

Information You Provide

Depending on how you use the Application, we may collect information such as:

  • Email address and account login information
  • Authentication information associated with Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google
  • Profile information you choose to provide
  • Media activity and history, including content you log, track, watch, read, rate, review, bookmark, or organize within the Application
  • Notes, lists, reviews, or other content you create within the Application
  • Subscription and account status information
  • Communications you send to us

You may choose not to provide certain information, but some features of the Application may not function properly without it.

Automatically Collected Information

When you use the Application, certain information may be collected automatically, including:

  • Internet Protocol (IP) address
  • Device type and device identifiers
  • Operating system and app version
  • Usage data and interaction information within the Application
  • Crash reports, diagnostics, and performance data
  • Dates, times, and duration of app usage
  • Push notification tokens and notification preferences

The Application does not collect precise location information from your mobile device. Geographic information associated with cultural institutions (such as museum locations) is entered manually or derived from publicly available data, and is not based on your device’s location.

Local Device Storage

The Application uses on-device storage to support offline functionality. Draft entries and cached data may be stored locally on your device and synchronized with our cloud database (Firebase Firestore) when an internet connection is available. This allows you to create entries while offline — for example, during a commute or on an airplane — and have them sync automatically upon reconnection. Locally stored data is subject to the same protections described in this Privacy Policy.

How We Use Information

We may use collected information to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Application
  • Create and manage user accounts
  • Authenticate users through Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google
  • Synchronize user activity and preferences across devices
  • Store and manage user data using secure cloud infrastructure
  • Personalize user experience and content organization
  • Process subscriptions and manage premium features
  • Send service-related notifications, reminders, updates, and alerts
  • Analyze usage trends and improve performance
  • Monitor reliability, security, and stability
  • Communicate with users regarding updates, support, notices, or service-related announcements
  • Respond to inquiries and customer support requests
  • Prevent fraud, abuse, or unauthorized activity
  • Comply with legal obligations

Push Notifications

The Application may send push notifications to your mobile device for purposes including reminders, updates, activity alerts, account notifications, and Application-related announcements.

You may choose to disable push notifications at any time through your device settings.

Subscriptions and Payments

Certain features of the Application may require a paid subscription. Subscription purchases and payment processing are handled through Apple’s App Store and are subject to Apple’s terms, conditions, and privacy practices.

We do not directly collect or store full payment card information.

Third-Party Services

The Application may use third-party service providers to help operate, analyze, and improve the Application, or to retrieve publicly available media information on your behalf. These providers may collect or process information in accordance with their own privacy policies.

Infrastructure and Authentication

  • Google Firebase (including Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Firebase Analytics, and related services) — used to store user account information, media logs, and Application content, and to authenticate users. Firebase’s privacy policy is available at: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
  • Sign in with Apple
  • Sign in with Google
  • Apple App Store subscription and payment services

Media Data APIs

  • The Movie Database (TMDB) — used to retrieve publicly available metadata for movies and television shows, including titles, episode information, runtime, genres, and creator details.   • Open Library (Internet Archive) — used to retrieve publicly available metadata for books, including titles, authors, and publication information. Open Library does not receive your personal information. Open Library’s privacy policy is available at: openlibrary.org/policies/privacy

We do not sell users’ personal information to third parties.

Information Sharing and Disclosure

We may share information in the following circumstances:

  • With service providers and vendors that assist in operating the Application
  • To comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or governmental requests
  • To protect the rights, safety, security, or property of users, the public, or Rover 5
  • To investigate fraud, security issues, or violations of our terms

We may also share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify individual users.

Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as necessary to provide the Application, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements.

If you would like us to delete your account or personal information, you may request deletion through the Application’s account settings or by contacting us at [email protected]. We will respond to reasonable requests within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law.

Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location and applicable laws, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to:

  • Access personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your information
  • Object to or restrict certain processing activities
  • Request a copy of your information

You may also stop all collection of information by uninstalling the Application using the standard uninstall process available on your device or app marketplace.

Account Deletion

Users may delete their account through the Application settings or by contacting [email protected]. Deleting an account may permanently remove associated content and records, subject to legal retention obligations.

Children’s Privacy

The Application is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without appropriate consent, we will take steps to delete such information promptly. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us at [email protected].

Security

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures to help protect information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

International Users

Your information may be processed and stored in countries other than your own, including the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When changes are made, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Application after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised Privacy Policy.
